Shooting the shooter

I was on the opposite side of the street when I spotted this video shooter setting up his camera. It was quite a stroke of luck to capture the woman sitting in the cafe through the moving taxi cab window.

Making time with the tour bus operator

This is one of the many tour buses in DC that stops by Union Station, a popular spot on Capitol Hill. The young man in the photo is busy flirting with the tour bus operator while paying customers are queuing up behind him. She is not amused.

Some things do get better with age

I just happened upon this couple as I turned the corner while walking around Old Town Alexandria this morning. They were indeed very happy. Nice to see.

Lost in her own thoughts

I have seen this woman on several occasions roaming around Georgetown, Washington DC. She may be a homeless but I do not know that for a fact as she will not have a conversation. This image was captured as she was staring at her refelection in an office window.

Ice dancing

Ice dancing on the first day of Winter. Strangely the temperature was pushing 70 degrees.

Just enjoying the day

Two teen girls enjoying the ice rink.

Ready for her close up

This young lady was at the ice rink with her father. Whenever she noticed anyone with a camera taking pictures of their kids she would strike a pose near by hoping to be seen. After watching her do this several times I asked her father if I might have a photo. He obliged and she was ready.

The mysteries of the metro farecard machine

Tourists are always perplexed by the Washington, DC Metro Farecard Machines and who can blame them. For a city that thrives on tourism you'd think they would make it easier for visitors.

The conversation

This couple was coming up the escalator for the DC Metro as I was headed down. The conversation was not a happy one. It continued as they got to the street.

Classical violin on the street

This street busker was playing classical music just inside the Union Station Metro. I actually recognized the piece as The Four Seasons the Spring Movement by Vivaldi. The only reason I know this is back in my youth I was taking violin lessons. That never really amounted to very much. This guy was very good.

This is Rachel

Rachel says she has will have been homeless for 10 years in March of this year. When she explained that her living on the street had something to do with the Supreme Court it became clear that she was also most likely mentally ill. Rachel carries all of her belongings with her in two large bags. One can only hope that Rachel will find shelter as the weather will turn markedly colder this week.

This is Greg

Greg is a homeless man who is trying to make his way by being a Street Vendor for the "Street Sense Newspaper" in Washington, DC. He's only been doing it for a short time but seems determined. It is hard work being out in the cold. Greg's spot is in front of Union Station in Washington, DC. To learn more about Street Sense visit www.streetsense.org

This is Garcia

Garcia is a homeless man who has been on the streets for as long as he can remember. When I sat down next to him he offered me some of the newspapers he was sitting on as the wall was very cold. A touching gesture considering how many office workers were passing by without so much as a glance at Garcia. He was happy to have his photo taken in return for a cash donation.

A hard working street busker at 18th & H Street

You hear him well before you can see this street busker playing his trumpet from a selection of sheet music in a well worn, leather bound book. He will tell you he has played every piece in the book more than a few times. If you're in the neighborhood on almost any morning give a listen and make a donation. This is hard work.

Two homeless friends

Two homeless friends warming themselves inside Union Station. Just outside the frame are two police officers about to escort them from the building as they had been there for longer than the allowed time. The "allowed time" is an arbitrary concept that varies from day to day.

A mysterious man on the train

When I entered the train car it was empty except for this man sitting at the far end of the car. I was alone in the car with him for about 20 minutes and he never moved or changed his expression.

The shoe shine

This is a very busy shoe shine stand in Union Station, Washington, DC. Not the easiest place to get a shot but if you're quick about it you can do it.

Window shopping
